1. Name of your organization and what do you do?

The organization is In Lieu of Movement and what we do is raise awareness and funds for various causes using fashion and social media networks (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). This movement is one in which fashion meets social consciousness and charity. It’s as simple as it sounds!

2. How did you get started?

The idea for this movement has been around for about a year! I knew that I wanted to make a difference but it needed to be in a way that was genuine and that appealed to people. I love fashion and figured that the best way to raise awareness and monetary funds for various causes close to my heart would be through t-shirt sales. Everyone loves a good t-shirt, especially one with a story and a purpose. So the idea came to me to launch this movement, in lieu of whatever the cause is for the month. Each month a cause will be highlighted; you can find pictures, information, etc on the highlighted cause via our various social network mediums. Everyone can become part of the movement by purchasing a t-shirt! When you do make a purchase, part of the proceeds go to a REPUTABLE organization aiding that particular cause.

3. What’s your vision for the future of your company?
My vision for this company is that we make a large impact on the lives of people all around the world. We’re so blessed beyond words and with each shirt sale I’m hoping that In Lieu of Movement can help better the life of someone else in need. I dream about people all over (even a few socially conscious celebs) wearing my tees and embracing the idea of being our brothers’ keepers. The sky is the limit and with so many supporters backing the movement, I’m sure In Lieu of Movement will be a success!

4. What interested you in partnering with 4HNYC?
Our May 2013 tees will be In Lieu of Haiti! I wanted to start at home, being a Haitian-American myself. Haitian Flag Day is celebrated on May 18th and I knew that plenty of young Haitians like myself would want to celebrate our heritage and cultural pride. While searching for the reputable organization that would receive the funds (from t-shirt sales) to aid in the improvement of Haiti, I stumbled upon 4HNYC through my cousin Jana-Lynn. She led me to their site and instantly I KNEW this is was were the money needed to go. It was especially touching to know that the funds that 4HNYC are raising are going towards book bags for young Haitian students. Being a 3rd school teacher myself, education is deeply important to me! I would be thrilled to see 300+ book bags full of supplies go to children in need, to help them succeed academically.

5. What’s your favorite song? Why?

Being a lover of great music, my favorite song changes every few years. I’d say one of my top 5 favorite songs for the past year or so has been Jill Scott’s “Blessed”…. That I am! I’m young, black, sane, not doing too bad for myself and blessed with loving friends and family. I’m privileged to have been waking up every day with the ability to be what I was called to be. There’s no way I can sit back and not attempt to be a blessing to others!

He knew that I would need to be here in this place, in this frame of mind. He knew how long it would take me to get to this place. He knew that I didn’t need this back then, when I was asking for it. When I missed it, He let me. When I prayed for restoration, He left me hanging (read: healing). He knew I needed to do without so I’d recognize what I needed when I saw it. When the healing took place, I couldn’t tell you, exactly. One day, I was hurting. The next, I was happy. I finally figured out what to pray for; He had already set about giving it to me. Peace. Contentment. Joy. Jesus. That’s all I needed then. That’s all I need now; He’s just provided yet another way to answer my prayers, to fill my need. God gives peace. God gives love. God gives every good and perfect thing to His children, in His time (James 1:17, Ps. 84:11, Ecc. 3:11). God is good. God is wise. God is love. God’s on time. God be knowin’.
